Currently I'm watching only one airing drama: Flower Boy Ramyun Shop. I was completely ready to drop it after the first two episodes because it just didn't click with me, but everyone else loved it so much I decided to give it another shot. And it was better! But now I'm ten episodes in, not invested at all, kind of hate the two male leads, but pretty much commited. I've passed the point of no return. I just can't bare to stop when I've already put this much time into a show. I just really wished I liked it better.
Issue #1: Chi-soo - Arrogant jerk robot masquerading as human. Really guy, you don't understand what 'jealousy' feels like? Are you new to planet Earth? Also- Jung Il-woo is not a very strong comedic actor. I thought he did a really nice job in Return of Iljimae, but his work in FBRS is just kind of manic and screechy. It's as though he's acting the way he thinks funny should look/sound like, but it's completely missing the mark. Comedy isn't for everyone.
Issue #2: Kang-hyuk - Condescending, passive-aggressive Nice Guy. Apparently fandom loves him? I don't get it. Episode 10 was the first time he didn't drive me to distraction. I thought his date with Eun-bi was sweet, but I'm never going to get over him guilt-tripping her into keeping the ramen shop.
Eun-bi is a hit and miss character for me. I know not every woman is going to be strong ALL the time, but sometimes I get whiplash when it comes to her reactions. But the egg trick she pulled on Chi-soo? CLASSIC.
Ba-wool is a character I'd really like to say I love, but his "gay panic" reactions got really tiresome and were horribly unfunny. The rest of the time though, he's a character I quite enjoy.
I went ahead and started City Hall... and it's kind of a mirror of my dealings with FBRS. Initially I wasn't enamored of it, but there is so much love for this show in drama fandom I gave it another try. And then it was good! For a while... Now I'm ten episodes in and the election has only now begun and I feel like it will never. end. I think Mi-rae is an interesting character, I just wish the storyline made any sense. I don't think they gave me enough motivation for her to run, especially because once she started campaigning she immediately started second-guessing herself because she wasn't an instant success. It's not like her protest was a hit right off the bat. So, I'm not buying the sudden crushing disappointment.
And her relationship with Joh-gook? Don't buy it. Mainly because I don't really see anything in him as a character. He doesn't really engage with the world around him. It's like he's playing dolls with the people he meets. There just doesn't seem to be a lot of cohesion between all the parts of this drama.
I don't even know what I'm trying to say at this point. Basically I couldn't care less if Mi-rae wins because I don't really feel like she cares herself (I feel like she cares more about disappointing people than doing anything).
Also: her buddy Director Lee totally reminds me of Kang-hyuk is how much I dislike him. He may not have supported the misuse of pageant funds, but he was still involved in it! Where does he get off acting high and mighty? How dare he look down on Mi-rae for not doing everything in her power to uncover injustice WHEN HE DID LESS THAN NOTHING. He drives me right up a wall. I want to punch him in the face many, many times.
Either I just keep picking dramas that are wrong for me or I've become IMPOSSIBLE TO PLEASE. This could very well be the case.
I'm anxiously awaiting subs for What's Up. Given the writer I have ever growing hopes for this show. Is it only getting subbed on viki? That's a bummer.
Anyway, I keep trolling the What's Up tracked tag on tumblr and people are only posting caps of Daesung (from Big Bang). What's a girl gotta do to get some Oh Man-seok up in this joint? Apparently he plays a drunk music professor? Can the show just be about him? The kids can sing and dance in the background. I don't really care.
Maybe I'll just go watch The Vineyard Man. AGAIN.
