Finally got around to this

Following the cut you will find a ranking of my least to most favorite of the dramas (Japanese, Korean, and Taiwanese) that I finished this year.

I think the whole this is pretty safe, though I do make a few allusions to plot points. So, I'm just going to cover my bases and say potential spoilers for Coffee House, Dal Ja's Spring, Fantasy Couple, Gumiho: Tale of the Fox's Child, Hotaru no Hikari 2, Iris, Kekkon Dekinai Otoko, Liar Game 2, My Girlfriend is a Gumiho, Natsu no Koi wa Nijiiro ni Kagayaku, Oh My Lady, Playful Kiss, Prosecutor Princess, Shokojo Seira, Smile You, Smiling Pasta, Something Happened in Bali, Sunao ni Narenakute, Tsuki no Koibito, and Yankee-kun to Megane-chan.

It's one big ol' image. JSYK )

Final Thoughts: I have to say, 2010 was a bit of a disappointment for me on the drama front. Nothing I watched this year merited a five star ranking on my own personal Drama Rankings. Maybe I'm just getting bitter in my old age, because my top two dramas I adored yet just couldn't bring myself to call them nearly perfect. But honestly, I wonder if I rewatched some of those 5 star dramas if I wouldn't demote them now. I watched them when the world of dramas was still mostly shiny, new, and wonderful. I thought everything was great back then. AH WELL.

What I can say is that there was a crop of excellent female characters, it's just too bad they were stuck in such middling (Eun Young, Coffee House) or straight-up awful (Maemi, Tsuki no Koibito) dramas.

Here is hoping for better results next year! I'm going to start 2011 off by finishing up Joseon X-Files and then either Chuno, Secret Garden, Story of a Man, or City Hall.
I hope all my fellow Christmas celebraters enjoyed their festivities. I know I did! And I hope everyone else enjoyed their weekends!

It's done snowing for the season now, right?

Finally I can post some pictures of my recent adventures in the world of knitting. They were Christmas gifts (minus the green hat), so I had to keep it on the DL. photographic evidence )

Next up is learning how to cable. I'm scared!

Finally managed to finish Hotaru no Hikari 2 and I pretty much don't have any feelings about it. For as much as I loved the first season, I have a distinct lack of any reaction for the second. It's not even that I disliked it or was bored. It was cute, there just didn't seem to be any point to it. We got eleven new episodes and what had changed? Hotaru didn't actually change at all until the last 15 minutes when she decided to start vacuuming. So, I ask you, what was the point?

ETA: LOVED the Doctor Who Christmas Special. I thought it was lovely and Matt Smith was excellent. I'm pretty psyched for the new season, which is great. Because, while I enjoyed the last one fine, I wasn't blown away by it by any means.
I made some Christmas cookies recently and took some crappy pictures, and now I'm going to share them! They weren't anything complicated. Far from it, actually. Kind of lazy, white-trash-ish even? I made Chocolate Gooey Butter Cookies and Peppermint Bark. The chocolate cookies were made using cake mix, so pretty much the only thing easier is to just go ahead and buy the already made dough and slice (or break off) yourself some cookies. Peppermint Bark is made with white chocolate, which can't really be called chocolate, but I love peppermint. One of my favorite things about Christmas-time is Fannie May Peppermint Ice (and peppermint ice cream. YUM).

It was all edible in the end. Success! )

Things I need to do:
  • Buy something for our extended family grab bag. It's all for laughs, but I'm having a hard time coming up with something. I'm thinking about a giant bouncy ball I saw at Bed Bath & Beyond

  • Finish Hotaru no Hikari 2 so I can make my year end drama list. I haven't watched any dramas since the beginning of November. It's crazy. I have been watching a LOT of Psych and I'm kind of in love with Gus, fyi.

  • Bitch about how Community didn't get a Golden Globe nomination. It's ridiculous.

My car started yelling at me about the air pressure in my tires yesterday , so I went to four different gas stations last night after work. The first one ate my money and didn't work, the second one at least had an "out of order" sign up, the third one didn't have an air pump, and the fourth was having it's parking lot repaved. I finally gave it up as a lost cause and went home.

Hotaru no Hikari 2 continues to be cute, but not as engaging as the first season. Hotaru and Buchou are magic together as always, it's the rest of the show that leaves something to be desired.

I finished my TV meme and now I'm not quite sure what to do with myself. So, I suppose I can give a few quick updates on what I'm watching at the moment.

Leverage - Good fun! Leaps of logic abound, but it doesn't really matter as long as you have the crew :)

Mad Men (4x04 "The Rejected") - I think the show has been aces since it started back up. I'm looking forward to a possible Don Draper breakdown in the future. The man's life is in shambles. The shit has to hit the fan AT SOME POINT. Maybe more secretaries need to through things at him.

True Blood (3x09 "Everything is Broken") - I love you Jason Stackhouse. Your idiocy is just too endearing, but your storyline this year IS BORING ME TO TEARS and YOU'RE BEING KIND OF A DICK. I liked that mildly self-aware speech he gave to the high school QB a few episodes back, and I like that he's recognized he needs to do something worthwhile with his life. But the way he's going about it is just so self-absorbed and, I guess, VERY Jason-Stackhouse. Regarding Tara: I KNEW FRANKLIN WASN'T DEAD. I really wish Tara had been the one to kill him :/.

Hotaru no Hikari 2 (Episode 5) - WTF BUCHOU? Take it back!

Yankee-kun to Megane-chan (Episode 7) - Finally an OTT manga drama I can get behind. It's actually funny, thank goodness. Though subs seem to have stalled on it :/

Gumiho: Tale of the Fox's Child (Episode 6) - I feel like the show had been treading water for sometime. There are only so many times I can watch people search for Yeon Yi before I start ffing. But finally we got some movement with the Lady finding out what the Lord was up to, Yeon Yi's boyfriend seeing her Gumiho fur, and Momma Gumiho getting smacked with some kind of binding charm by the demon hunter who then proceeded to THROW HER INTO A LAKE. Right on show.

And because I'm having meme withdrawal:

Ask me my Top Five whatevers. Fannish or literary or RL or otherwise. Any top fives. Doesn't matter what -- fandoms, characters, ice cream flavours, cartoon moments, women/men in my fandoms, OTPs, ideal holiday destinations, goals for the future, celebrity crushes, books I wish would be made into movies, love songs, etc. And I will answer them all in a new entry.
While Hotaru no Hikari 2 isn't exactly catching the same magic as the original (not that I expected it too), it's still a lot of fun. Who can say no to more adventures with Ahomiya and Buchou? NO ONE.

That being said, episode 3 was fantastic and must be presented in picspam form.

We begin with our OTP going out to dinner with a woman from Buchou's past. In any other drama, our heroine would probably look on this woman as possible trouble (with good reasoning). Hotaru just kind of looks up to her and finds strength to take on her new task of "tolerance". Anyway, the owner of the restaurant, a kouhai of Buchou's, gives them a bunch of goya as a thank you for coming.

Turns out, Buchou hates goya and only ate it to go along with the flow of the evening. Hotaru comes clean that she too hates the bitter melon and only ate it because Buchou seemed to like it.
