Finally got around to this

Following the cut you will find a ranking of my least to most favorite of the dramas (Japanese, Korean, and Taiwanese) that I finished this year.

I think the whole this is pretty safe, though I do make a few allusions to plot points. So, I'm just going to cover my bases and say potential spoilers for Coffee House, Dal Ja's Spring, Fantasy Couple, Gumiho: Tale of the Fox's Child, Hotaru no Hikari 2, Iris, Kekkon Dekinai Otoko, Liar Game 2, My Girlfriend is a Gumiho, Natsu no Koi wa Nijiiro ni Kagayaku, Oh My Lady, Playful Kiss, Prosecutor Princess, Shokojo Seira, Smile You, Smiling Pasta, Something Happened in Bali, Sunao ni Narenakute, Tsuki no Koibito, and Yankee-kun to Megane-chan.

It's one big ol' image. JSYK )

Final Thoughts: I have to say, 2010 was a bit of a disappointment for me on the drama front. Nothing I watched this year merited a five star ranking on my own personal Drama Rankings. Maybe I'm just getting bitter in my old age, because my top two dramas I adored yet just couldn't bring myself to call them nearly perfect. But honestly, I wonder if I rewatched some of those 5 star dramas if I wouldn't demote them now. I watched them when the world of dramas was still mostly shiny, new, and wonderful. I thought everything was great back then. AH WELL.

What I can say is that there was a crop of excellent female characters, it's just too bad they were stuck in such middling (Eun Young, Coffee House) or straight-up awful (Maemi, Tsuki no Koibito) dramas.

Here is hoping for better results next year! I'm going to start 2011 off by finishing up Joseon X-Files and then either Chuno, Secret Garden, Story of a Man, or City Hall.
*le sigh*

So, I finally finished Sunao ni Narenakute this weekend and am pretty relieved I don't have that hanging over my head anymore. I never disliked it as much as a lot of my flist did. If I had, I would have dropped it even though I was halfway through it, like I did with Personal Taste and Take Care of the Lady. With those, I was bored the entire time, at least with SunaNare it had a pretty excellent set of beginning episodes. Too bad it never lived up to it's potential.

The main problem is that it became the Nakaji Show. Maybe I wouldn't have minded quick so much if it hadn't been initially presented to me as an ensemble. Sure, everyone got their own storyline, but they all related back to Nakaji. And Nakaji was never that intriguing of a character to me. Oh, you feel bad about shooting photos for a trashy adult magazine? Wah. Whatever.

I never really disliked Nakaji, though he was guilty of toying with Haru. He was never spiteful about it, he was just self-absorbed. And is that any surprise when everyone falls in love with you?

Speaking of Haru, she was a sympathetic character to me. Sure, I got annoyed with how non-committal she could be, but I also understood where she was coming from. Her life simply wasn't working out the way she had hoped. That's a huge blow to your self-confidence. She was trying to figure out who she was and I was proud of her in the end for sticking with it and not taking the easy way out.

I'm just going to come out and say that Doctor annoyed me. I know lots of people loved him, and he was nice guy, but I thought he was just as self-absorbed in many ways as Nakaji was. He really was never interested in what Haru was going through, he loved her and that's all that mattered. He had tunnel vision in a lot of ways and it was frustrating. He also got majorly shafted in his storyline. Send him back to Korea! Problem SOLVED.

Poor Peach, she barely got to do anything after her initial trauma. I can't even really give an opinion on her because her main focus was as a sounding board for other characters. In a stronger drama she would have been allowed to be a real person.

Finally, Linda. Poor Linda. If anyone got the short end of this stick in this drama it was him. He had the potential to be the most interesting character and instead he was just used by the writer as a dramatic tool. It was lazy and insulting. Spoilers... )

I hope the summer season is better. I don't think anything can be worse than the weak combo of SunaNare and TsukiKoi. FROWNY FACE.

I feel like the universe is trying to tell me something. I've been trying to download the final episode of Sunao ni Narenakute since yesterday and have been failing miserably. It keeps timing out. I've gotten the most recent That IT Crowd and True Blood no problem, and I just dled ep 6 of Yankee-kun to Megane-chan (which is just adorable). But every time I try to get that darn Twitter drama it keeps timing out or just imploding in on itself in general.

What's the dealy-o? Does the internet hate this drama as much as my flist does?

So far this week has been the polar opposite of last.  Work is chill and I don't feel the need to murder people.  I would have to say things are looking up.  Though I just right back into it next week with travel and events and deadlines; so I'll just enjoy this calm right now.

ACen was fun, if very abbreviated.  24 hours is a far cry from the three days I'm used to.  I almost feel like I didn't have enough time to truly enjoy it.  I arrived and once I had unwound from the last 5 days it was time to go home again.  And it made me sad.  I did love getting to see everyone, I just wanted to see MORE of you.

One thing is for sure: I'm done with the Artist's Alley.  I just don't have the time or desire to put more energy into making things when they just aren't going to be received well by the patrons.  I thought I would give it a shot this year since the economy had calmed down a little, but it went about as well as last year.  There are just other vendors who are more creative and have better resources... and it's just not where my interest lie.

Having said that, I definitely want to get back into the cosplay game.  It's been about 2 years since I last cosplayed and I miss it.  The problem I have is that the (very small amount of) anime I watch isn't really cosplay material.  I pretty much stick to simple shoujo stories like Fruits Basket and Kimi ni Todoke... and there really isn't anything that interesting to choose from.  So, cosplay buddies, let me know your plans so I can play along.

Finished Oh My Lady! and it was very cute if unremarkable.  There were elements there for something but it just never stepped up its game.  The majority of the episodes just seemed to involve a lot of pivoting and not much plot.  Things picked up in the end, but it felt to me like the writer woke up from a nap and realized "Crap, we better finish this".  Because while I can see Min Woo falling for Gae Hwa, I wish we could have seen the same from her.  Granted, it's the ending I wanted, but it didn't feel earned.

Now I need to catch up on Personal Taste, which kind of bores me actually but I feel committed since I'm on ep 11.  It's never really clicked with me and I don't really like any of the characters so I don't know why I'm still watching.  There are some fun moments, but it really just kind of drags for me.  And Prosecutor Princess, which given the whispers on my flist gets really good?!  :D  I was loosing steam on that one too.  I think I'm on ep 7?

Sunao ni Narenakute continues to be very engaging.  I'm enjoying it and it's slightly ridiculous storylines very much.  It doesn't hurt that I love all the characters.  Though I think Peach and Linda are at the top of my list at the moment.  I like Haru, but they could spend a little less time on her since she really didn't have anything meaty until the rooftop confrontation.

The first episode of Tsuki no Koibito didn't disappoint.  Though it's going to be hard to root for Kimura since his character is a GIANT dick.  I kind of just want Maemi and Shu Mei to go off and be bffs and leave him in their dust.
So I watched the 3rd episode of Sunao ni Narenakute and am still really enjoying it. But there was one thing that stood out to me:

When Nakaji's tattoo-sharing ladyfriend told Haru that she had met him in Bali, all I could think was "WELL THIS ISN'T GOING TO END WELL."

Thanks to Something Happened in Bali I know exactly what happens to couples that meet there, and it'a not as nice as you might think!

Plus, the actress who plays this woman was Miwa from A Million Stars and we all know how well that ended for everyone. GOOD TIMES.  :D

SO, the first episode of Sunao ni Narenakute is out and subbed and kind of blew my expectations out of the water. I honestly wasn't that interested in it besides wanting to check it out for Ueno Juri and Eita (both of whom are ADORABLE. I LOVE EITA'S RIDICULOUS EARS), because... it was a drama about Twitter. And while I do enjoy Twitter I just didn't think a story based around it would be that strong.

Well, that's before I knew how potentially crazy this drama is going to be. CRAZY, PEOPLE. CRAZY. We are only one episode in and there is already a hefty helping of lying, kissing, piggyback rides, mysterious tattoos, student-teacher crushes, drugs, baby daddies, workplace sexual harassment, and a whole heck of a lot of secrets. Plus, it's got kind of an awesome soundtrack (Hi there, Ting Tings!).

I'm already not a fan of the complicated powerpointish tricks the director seems to love when it comes to changing scenes, but I can get over that. My only real concern is that there is so much it will feel disjointed.

This is in sharp contrast to Personal Taste which I just find kind of insanely boring. I keep thinking "Oh maybe the next episode will be better" but here I am after episode 5 and I still really just don't care. The two leads annoy me. It's not a matter of Kae-in being kind of pathetic, because I think that is very human. It's that the story has handled it so poorly. There is no reason for me to root for her. And Jin-ho? SO DULL. WOW. And together? Blahsville.

There is no spark whatsoever to this script. It's supposed to be a romantic comedy, right? I figure I should have laughed at least once by now. I do want to stick around to see Yoon Eun-hye's cameo though.
