It was a REALLY close contest, and Buchou put up a good fight. But in the end, everyone's favorite coffee prince pulled out the win.

Congratulations Han Kyul, you are THE drama boyfriend!

Sorry I took so long to finish this, real life was kind of distracting for a while. Plus, they were tied for a really long time.

I played a little bit of catchup on Smile, You. I'm through episode 40 and I'm really looking forward to the finish line. It's not that I don't enjoy the show - I love watching Jung-In and Hyun-Soo grow as a couple. They are insanely adorable and it's refreshing to just watch a pair be happy. I don't know that I've ever watched a drama that followed a couple all the way through courtship and into married life.

But 40+ episodes is a LOT. I don't think I'll ever commit to something like this again. It's one thing with American television that has 22 episodes stretched out for an entire season, it's something completely different to have 2 episodes week in and week out. If I'm this worn out watching it I can't imagine how beat the cast is.

So yeah, we're going to keep it short for the near future.

In the interest of keeping things short, I picked up an anime! I have a disc of Cowboy Bebop sitting around, but that's my bike workout anime. I've been NOT working out, so I haven't watched it. What I did start watching was Kimi ni Todoke because [ profile] jiayi mentioned it and I thought it sounded cute.

It's the story of Sawako, a shy girl that is consistently misunderstood by her peers. Her natural tendency for gloomy expressions and introverted nature come off creepy and have earned her the nickname "Sadako" (At first I thought I was reading the synopsis for The Wallflower when I looked this up). The anime follows her journey as she finally makes some friends and starts to break out of her shell. It's very cute and the characters are a lot of fun.

There is one small problem - I just can't see Sawako as creepy. Besides a few odd looking chibis and expressions here and there, she is drawn very pretty. She's quiet, but whenever she does speak she is sweet and is only interested in making people happy. Sawako is like a blend of Tohru and Hana from Furuba.

I guess rumors have built up so much around her that everyone is ready to interpret her as creepy despite what she actually says or does. I can see people avoiding her on account of her shyness, because that makes people feel awkward. And, well, who am I kidding. I'm sure plenty of kids are mean-spirited enough to tease, but it happens less so in high school.

Anyway, it's just an aspect I have to deal with because the rest of the show is enjoyable. Sawako's friends are strong and supportive and her love interest is pretty adorable. He is someone she admires but that isn't what he wants to hear. Sawako's repeated misunderstandings of his intentions and his dismay at said misunderstandings are precious.

SO, I finished Something Happened in Bali and quickly moved on to Fantasy Couple because I needed something as light-hearted and fun as Bali was depressing and soul-crushing.

Seriously, I don't believe any other drama has so nearly convinced me that the human race is nothing more than a collection of incredibly selfish and self-serving villains. At least in Maou there were some glimpses of good. In Bali, nothing of the sort. Even our heroine who began the show as a bright spot of spunk and determination despite her situation was soon revealed to be just as money-hungry as everyone else.

I don't think anyone on that show was capable of caring about anything other than their own feelings. Even for how much Jae Min loved Soo Jung, what mattered (in the VERY TRAGIC END) was how he felt. So even though I really wanted to root for him because he had been through so much and fought so hard, it was impossible. Love as no place in the world of Bali, because while Soo Jung claimed to love her pride was always more important. Better to take care of yourself than risk anything.

Liar Game 2 was pretty much what I expected it to be - a weak retread of the original series. Liar Game never really felt like a true drama to me, more like a very fun reality show. The problem that Liar Game faces is keeping people engaged. It's just as easy to get sucked in as it is to have your eyes glaze over. This happens for me whenever the games go on for multiple episodes. It all gets so convoluted that nothing makes sense and you just want Akiyama to win already because you know he will. That was the main issue with LG2, there were too many looooong games, especially that gold-smuggling one. It wasn't even that clever and just went. on. for.e.v.e.r.

That's why I think the movie is going to be really good. They have a small timeframe to work in and I'm sure they will make the best of it.

I just have ONE episode of Fantasy Couple left and I'm not going to be able to get to it for a couple of days and it's killing me. I just want Anna and Chul Soo to have their happily ever after already. The series chugged along so nicely in the beginning, but these last two eps have dragged. It's like the writers realized they wanted some angst so they threw in some half-cooked reason why the leads had to be apart.

It's mopey and not nearly as fun as the rest of the series was. If they wanted angst they should have done more with that girl who loved Chul Soo. Wasted opportunity in my opinion. She was so close to being wickedly evil but never quite reached it.

That being said, I'm pretty sure I want to do a post solely about Jo Anna, because she is AMAZING. What a great character.

Also, Smile, You got extended AGAIN. I'm already behind 5 episodes thanks to viikii hiccuping and links getting broken. I may cry.
Guys, the Drama Boyfriend Super Bowl is neck and neck! Buchou is currently ahead of the coffee prince by one point. If you haven't voted yet, VOTE NOW!.

I really need to make a post about the dramas I've finished recently (Something Happened in Bali and Liar Game 2) but I'm just not motivated enough at the moment. Plus, I'm marathoning Fantasy Couple and loving it. Anna is fantastic.
Sorry for the delay in posting, I've been mourning the loss of my Colts in Super Bowl XLIV ;_;

Han Kyul ((Coffee Prince)Takano Seiichi (Hotaru no Hikari)

[Poll #1523723]
Well, we had another tie for the last round. As a result, two very nice boys must now FIGHT TO THE DEATH. Which one will you choose?

[Poll #1511744]

Polls will close at 6pm EST on January 14th

Vote Now! )
One of the matchups from Wild Card Round 1 ended in a tie, so I'm reposting. I'll keep it open through tomorrow morning (8am EST) and hopefully we'll have a winner. If not, I'll figure something else out:

[Poll #1510828]
Good morning flisties! (If you are in the western hemisphere, of course)

This is just a quick reminder to go vote for the first wild card round in the Drama Boyfriend Playoffs. All the cool kids are doing it!

The two different polls are here and here.

I believe there is currently one tie that needs to be broken. I'll leave the voting open until 6 pm EST tonight. And then reevaluate. Hopefully there won't be any ties then.

In other news...

I watched episodes 30 and 31 of Smile, You last night. I really started showing viewer fatigue during 30. I SO wish this hadn't been extended 16 episodes. I think it could have been a really excellent (the younger generation storylines of course, the parents generation will ALWAYS be dull) 30 episode drama. Things are wearing a little thin and getting pretty repetative.

Then I watched ep 31 and cried... TWICE. What the hell, show? ;_;

Match-ups were determined by the ranking each boyfriend had after the nominations round. First seed goes up against the fourth seed, 2nd against 3rd. Make sense? Here is an example (the number in parentheses is their original ranking number). Buchou had the highest ranking (2) so he is the number one seed. Togami had the lowest (24) so he is the fourth seed and therefor goes up against Buchou:

Note: The next 8 match-ups will go in my next post because LJ is being a giant bitch about having two polls in one post. I've remade them about 5 times and I'm going to lose my mind.

[Poll #1510194]
First, if you haven't voted here, go now! I need help classifying all our great drama boyfriends.

I saw the new Sherlock Holmes movie this weekend and it was very fun. Granted, the extent of what I know about Holmes canon can be summed up here. But I did see it with [ profile] csense_ilinmn who has been reading the stories since we were in diapers and she loved it too. There are hints of the original, she told me, but it is very much a Hollywood take on the whole thing.

The actual 'mystery' was pretty lacking, but the effects were great. I'm really glad I saw it on the big screen. Having said all that, Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law were fantastic. They MADE the movie.

Finally had some time to clean the house today. I feel a lot better. One of the many things I hate about winter is not being able to open the windows. Everything feels so stale. Yuck.

Up through episode 8 of What Happened in Bali and am really enjoying it (and dreading what is to come, of course). But really, Korea, isn't it a little early to start busting about the flashbacks? Especially for stuff that happened about two scenes ago.

Also, none of So Ji Sub's suits are tailored properly and it's driving me crazy. He constantly looks like a little kid trying on daddy's clothes.
rosdrise: (vmars - gotcha)
Alright, the floor is closed for nominations, the calculations have been... calculated... and we have our TOP 32 Drama Boyfriends! They are as follows: The moment you have been waiting for... )

As I've mentioned before (if you actually read my ramblings) those top eight nominees are the #1 seed of their respective divisions. Now we need the rest of the divisions!

I've come up with eight division categories that I think are sufficiently vague enough where a single guy could fall under several. That will make things a lot easier in the long run. I think I stretched a little with the Jae Ha one, but I wanted that option for some of the guys further down the list. Anyway!

Here are our 8 Drama Boyfriend Divisions: Split 'em up! )

Now I need your opinions! As I'm not familiar with several of these faces, I don't really know which division they belong in - that's where you come in. Just fill out the poll below (there are actually two since LJ has a length restriction).

Remember, each division only needs an additional three men, so spread your votes around to all the divisions. Thanks and happy voting! Vote now or forever hold your peace )

Did you make it to the end? AWESOME. Your reward is some statistics that may only interest me:

Dramas with the most nominees:

Actors with the most nominated characters

  • Vic Zhou - Zai Tian (Black & White), Ling (Mars), and Xu Le (Wish to See You Again)

  • Tsutsumi Shinichi - Nabeshime Kenichiro (Lunch Queen) & Sakuma (Sailor Fuku to Kikanjuu)

  • Yamashita Tomohisa - Naoki (Buzzer Beat) & Akira (Nobuta wo Produce)

SO, I figured I should get a handle on this thing and make some deadlines. Everyone has until I get home from work today (6pm EST) to submit their Top 12 Drama Boyfriends (or top whatever number if it's too hard to come up with 12). After that, I'm pretty sure we're going to need to have a tiebreaker vote for the last couple of spots. That vote will go up after 6.

Every vote counts! Just the last two lists submitted shuffled around our top 10. Look at see:

1. Han Kyul (Coffee Prince)
2. Takano Seiichi (Hotaru no Hikari)
3. Taek Gi (The Vineyard Man)
4. Tae Bong (Dal Ja's Spring)
5. Jae Ha (Spring Waltz)
6. Dal Gun (Bad Family)
7. Hwal (Triple)
8. Halu (Pride)
9. Dr. Min (Thank You)
10. Quan (Hana Kimi TW)

Post those lists! (I'm looking at YOU [ profile] dangermousie)
rosdrise: (bof - ji hoo)
I've been pondering how I want to go about the voting once all the nominations come in (speaking of which, if you'd like to point your flist over, the more the merrier). What I have in mind may be more trouble than it is worth, but why not try it. I know I want 8 divisions (like the NFL). The top 8 ranked nominees will be the number one seed in each division. Then we will take the remaining 24 teams and split them up. That's the easy part.

The hard part is I'd like each division to group together similar characters based on the number 1 seed. My problem is I don't know all these characters and could use everyone's creativity. Here are the current top seeds:

1. Han Kyul (Coffee Prince)
2. Takano Seiichi (Hotaru no Hikari)
3. Taek Gi (The Vineyard Man)
4. Hwal (Triple)
5. Halu (Pride)
6. Dr. Min (Thank You)
7. Jae Ha (Spring Waltz)
8. Tae Bong (Dal Ja's Spring)

So, given those (if they don't change of course, but I'm not really expecting that many more voters to pop in), what should our divisions be? I had been thinking something along the lines of:

Div 1: Reformed Woobie (Han Kyul)
Div 2: Successful and Sexy (Takano Seiichi)
Div 3: Guy Next Door (Taek Gi)
Div 4: Icy on the Outside (Hwal)
Div 5: Wanabe Playboy (Halu)

Aaaand, I don't know the other guys. So suggestions are very much welcome. And even what I have so far isn't set in stone at all.

For those interested, here are the rankings as they currently stand: TOP DRAMA BOYFRIENDS... )
