Day 10: Your Favorite Line/s by a Female Third Wheel

Unspoken Transformation - Mi-rae (Exhibition of Fireworks & Dae-soon (Get Karl! Oh Soo-jung)

Secondary lead women often speak volumes without saying a single word be it through evil glares or, my personal favorite, Meaningful!Wardrobe!Changes! The first instance of this I can remember was Chae Mi-rae in Exhibition of Fireworks who was in love with her dead fiance's brother. In any other show she very well could have been the heroine given the whole star-crossed lovers and parental disapproval thing she had going. But in Fireworks she was the second lead and therefore tried to rope her boyfriend into being her baby daddy and engaged in other under-handed tactics. About midway through the run of the show she adopted a severe ponytail to represent her newfound antagonist role and never looked back.

Dae-soon in Get Karl! Oh Soo-jung went through a similar transformation going from a bespectacled, soft-spoken jewelry store clerk into full on femme fatale mode in order to get. her. man. (and represent her evil female ways)

Day 09: Your Favorite Line/s by a Male Third Wheel

Every failure at recognizing Se-ri - Yoon Pil-joo (Best Love)

OK, so maybe this is just an excuse to talk about how much I am enjoying Best Love, because I AM. SO MUCH. Ae-jung is amazing and I want to be her best friend and see her succeed something fierce. Jin is so hilarious I could just watch him flail about all day.

Now, I know a lot of people are digging the Ae-jung/Pil-joo dynamic and I while I can understand why (she is great and he's nice/smart/successful) I'm not that invested in it personally. Of course, I not that invested in Ae-jung/Jin romantically that much at this point either. I am adoring all of their interactions because they are golden. Pure gold, people. Pure. Gold. But they're not really on the same page maturity-wise. Pil-joo and Ae-jung are, but again, I just see them as friends? It's that whole second-lead thing where I just never go for it.

What I am interested in Pil-joo/Se-ri. I'd be all over a drama based on their dynamic. Conceited idol princess meets sweet doctor blissfully unaware of pop culture? LOVE IT. I HOPE IT HAPPENS. As it is, I love how Pil-joo keeps Se-ri on her toes by continually never recognizing her. I love her :/ face everytime it happens.

It's bound to knock her down a peg or two which wouldn't hurt. And she can introduce him to life beyond the office with things like award shows and after parties.

Day 08: Your Favorite Line/s by a Female Lead Character

"Delicious!" - Gu Mi-ho (My Girlfriend is a Gumiho)

So, my other choice for this was Anna's oft-repeated demand of "Buy me jjajangmyun" in Fantasy Couple because I apparently like when people talk about food? But, I've already discussed how much I adore her and everything she does. So, let's turn our focus to another Hong Sisters' heroine who is the opposite of Anna's abrasive nature, but equally delightful.

I pretty much adored everything about Gu Mi-ho. The entire drama could have been her exploring the human world and eating meat and I would have been a happy camper.

Day 07: Your Favorite Line/s by a Male Lead Character

"Do you want to smell dirt?" - Oh Dal-gun (Bad Family)

The next couple of days of this meme are going to be difficult because I have such a shit memory. I will remember the most random things when it comes to shows but not like, you know, integral pieces of plot. Dialogue is something I have even more trouble with, since I'm watching stuff in another language on top of not paying attention to the world around me. So, these lines/dialogue answers are going to be pretty random.

BUT ANYWAY. BAD FAMILY. If you haven't watched this show and you enjoy things like humor, fun characters, and having your heart tugged amidst insanity, then you should probably check it out. Kim Myung-min plays Oh Dal-gun, a former gangster turned fake-uncle (watch the show to learn more) and "Do you want to smell dirt?" is his favorite threat.

There is a great review of Bad Family over at Thundie's Prattle here. Read it or just go ahead and watch the show because YOU SHOULD ANYWAY.

Day 06: Your Favorite Song from a Kdrama OST

Capital Scandal - Capital Scandal

Shippy and semi-spoilery MV behind the cut. Read more... )

To be fair, it's actually the entire Capital Scandal OST. I can't just pick one song. I love the swing feel of the entire thing. There are fun, peppy songs like the OP (above), romantic ones (Because of You), and some great instrumental tracks.

Honorable mention goes to the Goong soundtrack because I adored all of the instrumentals on that.

Day 03: Your Favorite Female Lead Character

Jo Anna - Fantasy Couple

This was an easy one! Made even easier by the fact I already did a post about this amazing woman. You can see it here: You WISH You were Anna.

The basic premise of Fantasy Couple, for those of you who haven't seen it (or the Kurt Russell/Goldie Hawn movie it's based on), Anna is a rich, haughty woman who has a few unpleasant run-ins with a poor plumber named Chul-soo. He ends up losing money and getting a shovel to the head. After falling off her boat Anna ends up in a hospital bed next to Chul-soo with no memory of who she is. So, in order to recoup some costs, Chul-soo tells her she is his live-in girlfriend named Sang-shil.

Cue shenanigans!

Anna is delightfully bitchy, but also a strong and refreshingly honest character.

Day 2: Your Favorite Male Lead Character

Jang Taek-gi - The Vineyard Man

To those on my flist who haven't had the pleasure of watching The Vineyard Man, my choice may seem odd. There are a plethora of handsome, charming, funny, sexy, smart male leads dotting the kdrama landscape. And there are certainly many better known dramas out there, especially on Yoon Eun-hye's own resume. But I dare anyone to watch this series and not fall completely in love with Taek-gi.

Oh Man-seok himself isn't traditionally handsome, I'd be the first to admit that, especially with the horrendous haircut he's saddled with in this show. But Taek-gi as a character is so completely winning that by the end I was convinced I'd never seen a more attractive man.

Taek-gi is the country bumpkin (and secretly smarty-pants former scientist) to YEH's Ji-hyun, the spoiled city girl. He's plenty rough around the edges, but more than makes up for it with his loyalty, humor, and unfailing sweetness. He is slow to trust and quick to anger, especially when dealing with Ji-hyun who manages to push ALL his buttons, but once that facade starts to crack... It was hilarious watching him deal with all these ~*~feelings~*~ and nearly heart-stopping having to wait to get resolution on what I thought was a deliciously romantic story for such a silly drama.

UGH. I WANT TO WATCH IT AGAIN. Someday. I need to finish my recaps anyway.

TL;DR - I love Taek-gi and wish he was real.

30 Days of Kdramas )
I have two memes to offer you today. Want to know my opinions? NOW IS YOUR CHANCE.

First, one I stole from [livejournal.com profile] shineaurorarose. The 30 Days of Kdramas meme.

Check out the list behind the cut here )

I can already tell you that for a lot of these I won't have clear cut answers. I'll just go with whatever pops into my head at the time. But I'll still do it! Besides, the first one is easy

DAY 1: Your Favorite Kdrama

Capital Scandal

I doesn't take much for something to become a favorite of mine. It just has to contain exactly everything that I love. Capital Scandal does just that. It's funny, poignant, clever, exciting, romantic and possesses an excellent wardrobe and soundtrack. There wasn't a chance in the world that I would love this series. It's the same reason that Utahime is my favorite jdrama.

I've heard people snipe that it's too slapstick, which I honestly don't get. I've never been a huge fan of physical comedy (unless it's done really well) and I never had an issue with Capital Scandal. What is does have is a wonderful cast of characters who are strong and care about each other.

You'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll love it. And if you don't... I just don't know if we can be friends anymore.

ANOTHER MEME, this time from [livejournal.com profile] beckerbell:

- Comment with "Hit me!"
- I'll respond by asking you five questions so I can get to know you.
- Update your journal with the answers to the questions.
- Include this explanation in the post and offer to ask other people.

1. What attracts you to any given series, whether drama or tv or anime or manga, etc.? - SEE ABOVE! :D

2. By the same token, what is an absolute dealbreaker in a series? - I don't know that I have an absolute deal breaker, because there always seems to be an exception to the rule in a lot of cases. What it usually comes down to is if enough of the characters annoy me enough I'll stop watching, which is pretty subjective. There are things that annoy me sometimes, but in other instances I find tolerable. But I don't think there are any plot points or genres that really rub me the wrong way.

3. Which actors do you follow/would you watch a drama specifically for them? - Right now I think the only one is Kang Ji-hwan. I watched Exhibition of Fireworks for that man and it nearly put me in a mental hospital by the end. But I'm not completely faithful since I seriously doubt I'll be touching 90 Days with a ten foot pole. There have been a few western actors that I've watched some pretty terrible things for, like Nicholas Lea (Krycek of X-Files fame). I tracked down a bad Lifetime movie and watched Xtro II: The Second Encounter (DON'T ASK) for him.

4. What's the worst thing you've ever read/watched? - This is pretty much impossible to answer! Usually my default answer for worst book is Dive from Clausen's Pier because I raged against the main character for the entire book. But it's not like it was poorly written, I JUST HATED HER. But I've read any number of bad romance novels (and usually finish them since I stay away from the Old-School romances as a rule after my first taste). I'm totally drawing a blank on tv/movies right now so we'll just go with something I just watched: Tron: Legacy. OMG SO BORING. I NEARLY DIED.

What is your absolute favorite series right now? - EASY. Parks and Recreation. It so funny and off-beat and sweet. I'm incredibly happy I gave it a second chance.

ETA: ALSO! I'm pretty bummed I can't watch Best Love on Viki. Who knows when WithS2 are going to get subs out D:
