I just started watching Exhibition of Fireworks this week...

... for the plot.
Okay, that's a gigantic lie, because for the first couple episodes I wasn't sure if I was going to be able to stand the plot. The basics are as follows:
Shin Na Ra is a smart, energetic girl who dreams about becoming an accountant (WHO DOESN'T). The problem is that for some reason she can't pass the test to become certified, though she has tried for the last seven years.

Her boyfriend, who was only interested in getting into her pants, somehow managed to pass after a couple years. She's rejected his advances (waiting for marriage) but has supported him financially over the course of that time including buying him a car and giving him a place to live (not that her parents know. SIN DEN!).
I think we can all see where this is going.
Seung Woo went on a three month business trip to San Francisco and is just returning at the beginning of the series. Na Ra is happy for his return and even more happy when he proposes.

Na Ra decides tonight is the night she will sleep with him because she is proud of him for passing his exams and thrilled about getting married. Seung Woo isn't interested and retreats to the rooftop to be emo. Na Ra confronts him and he informs her that he slept with a woman while he was in San Francisco.

Douchebag says it was just an impulse and he will still marry Na Ra in return for all the support she's given him over the years. ROMANTIC, RIGHT?

Na Ra doesn't think so. So she kicks his butt to the curb. Then she goes on a bender (just a quick note to say that dramas that revolve around late-twenty/thirtysomething have a LOT more drinking than high school dramas. I find it hilarious). In a drunken stupor Na Ra drops her engagement ring into a shot of soju and walks away. Moments later she realizes what she did and heads back to her table, only to find a choking In Jae who just downed the abandoned shot of alcohol plus ring (because people always drink other people's abandoned drinks, duh).

I'm cool with everything up until this point, but then things take a nosedive. Na Ra decides she doesn't want to let Douchebag go and instead wants to sabotage his new relationship with Mi Rae (who just so happens to have been the fiancee of In Jae's dead older brother, and who In Jae is also in love with) so he will come back to her. So, Na Ra pretends to be Douchebag's cousin, using her younger sister's name and age (20 instead of 29).

Seung Woo is panicking that Na Ra is going to ruin everything and informs her that he even if she does ruin his relationship he won't return to her. And, as an added bonus, tells Na Ra that he hasn't thought of her as a woman in years.
Can't you tell why she wants him back so bad? What a guy!
Na Ra is understandably upset and sets out to sooth her depression. In Jae joins her for the ride.

Which involves guns and purple wigs for some reason.

Later on Mi Rae runs into Na Ra and offers her a job. The job happens to be a beauty consultant at a makeup store (the chain is owned by In Jae's mother, because everyone knows everyone in Korea). In Jae will also be starting there to start paying back a debt he owes his mother for helping to pay for the medical expenses of one of the kids on the soccer team he coaches.

The next several episodes revolve around Na Ra scheming and blaming Mi Rae for her ex-boyfriend being a GIANT DOUCHEBAG. It's all so misguided that I nearly couldn't stand it. Luckily I had In Jae's allergy to shirts to sooth my woes (Have I mentioned Kang Ji Hwan is a beautiful man? Because he is).

In Jae is determined to undermine Na Ra's efforts because he loves Mi Rae and doesn't want to see her upset (since her fiancee already up and died on her). But at the same time starts developing this quirky/contentious/supportive/silly friendship with Na Ra, because she is fun to hang out with and they both have unresolved love issues.

It also involves dance parties

And stolen kisses to drive away high school admirers

Plus, he remembered her birthday when everyone else forgot (30! SO OLD). They interact like they are real friends, they harrass each other but it all has this underlying level of sweetness.

In the most recent episode I watched Na Ra finally decided to let Seung Woo go (THANK YOU) and to live a successful life on her own. He offers her an accounting job because he doesn't want her to work at the make-up store anymore (it makes him nervous). Na Ra says she is determined to be happier than him and find a better man than him (like that'll be hard) and to get a job on her own.
She obviously still cares for the douchebag, and I can hardly blame her for that since they were together for seven years. But living happily is the best revenge. Plus, now the door is open for more bathroom hijinks with In Jae

Date: 2009-03-10 04:35 pm (UTC)I THOUGHT I WAS PRETTY OBVIOUS. When I find an actor I like (and he is actually quite good) I tend to binge on his dramas. Luckily Kang Ji Hwan has been in some excellent ones.

Eye candy admitted (you stalker!), on both sides really, her get-ups are fucking adorable...I really like the wig and gun for some reason... ^^;; You'll have to keep us updated, I'm curious where this is going to go!

This was so random! He was coaching these kids (He had blackmailed Na Ra into playing cheerleader to get her ring back after he pooped it out... because the tweens wanted a pretty girl like the other team). The kids scores a goal and FALLS TO THE GROUND UNCONSCIOUS. They never even said what his problem was, and he appears to be fine now, so basically it was just an excuse to make In Jae get a job with Na Ra. He never really had a goal in life and his mom just wanted to get him involved in her company.
Everything about this is so coincidental you really can't take it too seriously.
Na Ra is pretty cute. She's dressing the part of the 20 year old now that everyone thinks she is one. She is determined to experience the fun that she missed out on during her years of studying/supporting her dbag boyfriend.
