Christmas cheer coming out of my ass

First, the bad news. I parked on the street in front of my house Friday night. Saturday morning I go out and discover some jackass has sideswiped my car in the early hours, busted my driver-side mirror, and ran. No note, nothing. So now I am out $450 for brand new mirror and the labor needed to reinstall it. Plus, I won’t get it until after the weekend due to the holiday. Until then I have to drive around like some redneck with a broken mirror. It’s a little scary driving sans mirror. I enjoy being able to see. I should count my blessings that it wasn’t worse. I can’t imagine what it would have cost if they had damaged more of my car.

I really hope karma comes back and bites them in the ASS.
Good news: I’m done with Christmas shopping! Now I just need to wrap everything. Christmas is rather small this year given I have no money, which is sad because I really do enjoy getting people things. I had also meant to make a rag quilt for my mom, but never got around to it. I’m finally in the Christmas spirit, though! I’m even listening to Christmas music at my desk (thanks, Pandora). We got a little dusting of snow, which almost ended with me on my ass because ice and heels don’t mix. But, I survived.
Watched a lot of stuff this weekend, including finishing up Bara no nai Hanaya which was FANTASTIC. It was so quietly amazing, like a slow burn of pure awesome. I don’t know that I’ve ever seen a drama quite so wonderfully romantic. Every single relationship was wonderfully portrayed, maybe none so perfectly as that between Eiji and Shizuku. The entire thing was so incredibly charming, everyone should watch it.
Also, I watched SyFy’s Alice, which initially I hadn’t planned on, but I heard several good things about. And for the most part it was entertaining, so I can’t really complain. Hatter was by far and away the best thing about the entire adventure. Such a fun character. I even watched the first episode of Primeval because the actor was in it as well (it was blah, I don’t know if I’ll watch more). As with a lot of shows, I enjoyed the first act far more than the second. I always seem to find myself more interested in the characters and how they meet and how the story unfolds than I do when it comes to the actual climax. Alice’s first half was a lot stronger than the second, it just started to feel really sloppy.

Honestly I’ve always been a little skeeved out by the people that shipped Alice and the Mad Hatter. I just didn’t GET IT. He’s crazy, she’s a little girl, what the hell? But here? Maybe because I really liked Alice and LOVE Hatter I was all over it. Just in this instance though.
I think they did a good job of taking the story and making it their own. As a whole I don't really mind "re-imaginings" of stories - if they are done well. Clueless is a fantastic movie and who would have guessed?
Alice was only distantly related to the original, but with plenty of winks to the real story. The changes didn’t really bug me, I just wish they had taken more care to explain the world they created. There was one thing though, that I really can’t get behind and it took me a while to realize just what it was about the version that rubbed me the wrong way:
NO ONE WAS INSANE.
Sure, the Queen of Hearts was kind of a bitch, but she was nowhere near the batshit crazypants she is supposed to be. Hatter was fantastic and completely adorable, but not Mad at all. And the Duchess was as un-Duchess like as humanly possible. Everyone was just a regular person, except for the White Knight who was kind of a senile old man. I get that they were doing their own thing, and I had fun watching it, but you kind of expect everyone in Wonderland to be pretty off. Isn’t that the whole point?

Smile, You continues to be the essence of cute thanks for Jung-in and Hyun-soo. I mean seriously, it's too adorable. I kind of love just getting to watch two people fall in love, treat each other well, and become better individuals through doing so. The rest I can take or leave (though I'm dying to do something for
drama_hunt about Sung-joon and Ji-soo, our secondary OTP).
Watched episodes 3 and 4 of IRIS which continues to kick ass. Again, we get to see too people fall in love and it's wonderful, though obviously going to the exact opposite direction of Smile, You. IRIS is a show I think I'm only going to be able to watch 2 episodes of at a time because it is just SO action packed. It's a lot to take in. Very fun though. VERY.
Also, I caught up on all the episodes of Community I missed because I foolishly decided to watch FlashForward instead. This is one of the funniest things on TV right now, DARE I SAY FUNNIEST? I love it so much.

I really hope karma comes back and bites them in the ASS.

Date: 2009-12-21 05:50 pm (UTC)Hey, people who are diehard fans of the story have the Tim Burton version next year to look forward to? :) (I myself won't be watching it myself because 1) I don't like Tim Burton or Helena Bonham Carter or the combination of Burton + Depp + Carter, and 2) I kinda really loved SyFy's Alice and I can already imagine people falling in love with Burton's and no. Just. No. x_x)

Date: 2009-12-21 06:37 pm (UTC)I've only ever liked Big Fish (which I never... finished... >>), but I have high hopes for Burton fans anyway. :3

Date: 2009-12-21 06:22 pm (UTC)I am like almost finished with the Christmas shopping. I feel like there is only just a few more things to get and then I'm golden. Wrapping is an entirely seperate hurdle, that on top of getting the house visitor-ready.
I was really 'meh' about Alice. I mean, I'm not a huge fan of the series to begin with but I was kinda dissapointed that the same people who made Tin Man feel so unique took the same format & made Alice feel utterly trite. It was basically the same plot, excepting of course they gave us some romantic resolution (much appreciated there). Yeah, Hatter was adorable but unfortunately Primeval is definitely boooooring!
Hope you have a very Merrrrrry Christmas! :D

Date: 2009-12-21 06:33 pm (UTC)RE: Alice. It could have been a lot better. They really did take some chances by really changing things. I kind of loved the reveal with Alice's dad, but I hated the idea of squeezing emotions from people. The inhabitants of Wonderland are chock full of emotion, TOO MUCH, in fact... so I didn't really like that.
There really isn't much to the plot of Alice in Wonderland beyond Alice dealing with a bunch of crazies, so you take the crazies away and then what do you have left?
How is it possible to make a show about dinosaurs BORING? I don't get it!

Date: 2009-12-21 08:03 pm (UTC)I taped Alice, but still haven't gotten around to watching it yet. The Alice x Hatter thing always creeped me out. And did you hear that Brittaney Murphy from Clueless died the other day? : (

Date: 2009-12-21 08:24 pm (UTC)I hope you like Alice, for all my complaints I did enjoy it. I don't think it was spectacular or anything, but it kept me entertained. It's always nice to see something that someone put some imagination into.
I DID! I couldn't believe it when I saw the news on my homepage. It's so sad. From what I'm hearing she was known to have a drug problem which no doubt contributed to her heart attack.

Date: 2009-12-22 01:38 pm (UTC)Nope. They kept asking me if I had any idea who did it, and I wish I did. As it is, it all falls under my deductible so I'm up shit creek. :(

Date: 2009-12-24 07:31 pm (UTC)QFT on the whole Alice thing. At first I didn't like it, but when it got to the White Knight, it felt like Alice again. I L-O-V-E-D- the Hatter! I so agree with you about people making it all insane and getting off on it--I detest that! When will someone realize that it's just a dreamworld? Nothing more. We'll talk about it on New Year's I'm sure, but, yeah, LOVED Hatter <3
