REMINDER: Vote now in the Drama Boyfriend Playoffs. I'll leave the Conference Championships up through Friday.

I watched the first episode of Wallflower/Yamato Nadeshiko Shichi Henge/Perfect Girl Evolution/WHATEVER (I'm going to stick with Wallflower since that's how the majority of my flist refer to it) and I think I might have hated it. It was pretty insane. Now, I don't mind insane. I adored Hana Kimi after all. But this just felt like a giant mess.

The entire episode was just so manic. I felt like they were cutting to different camera shots and scenes every 5 minutes. They never let your eyes just rest and follow a scene through. It was like a kid who'd had too much soda. The drama was bouncing off the walls. I'll give it one more episode and put it aside, I have other things I want to watch.

Of course, I could just be hyper sensitive given the other drama I'm watching is Something Happened in Bali which is about as polar opposite a drama as you could get. Maybe I'm experiencing drama hypothermia.

Speaking of Bali, MAN is it depressing. It makes you kind of lose faith in humanity. Everyone is either evil or irrevocably damaged. Not exactly an uplifting story. No wonder I don't watch that many melodramas (or really any at all). This is getting really tough for me to trudge through and I know it's only going to get worse. D:

Smile, You made me cry again. I'm very grateful that Jung In's father has finally grown up. I like how they've dealt with it though, he's still very much the same man, he just finally feels some responsibility for his actions and his family. I'm very concerned, however, at what Hyun Soo's mother is cooking up.

VAMPIRE DIARIES is back tonight. I'm not at all ashamed at how excited this makes me.

ETA: OH, but to prove I don't rot my brain all the time, I am reading A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini (he also wrote The Kite Runner) and it's wonderfully written but completely heartbreaking.

I've been enjoying You're Beautiful since it started. It's a show about a nun-in-training disguising herself to join a boyband. I don't see how it couldn't be funny, especially since it's being penned by the Hong sisters. Of course, I thought FlashForward was going to be brilliant and it just gets more dull every week. I may start watching Vampire Diaries in real time and saving FF for downloads. I'd really like to stick with it through the season but it's not going to be easy.

Anyway, I've seen several people that have taken issue with the character of Mi Nam. That's totally understandable, she's basically a moron. A sweet, adorable moron, but a moron nonetheless. It can be frustrating watching your supposed heroine not be able to tie her own shoes, so to speak. Personally, it hasn't really bothered me, but I can see how it would.

What I do take issue with is the combination of Mi Nam's character and the other big female roles: He Yi, Mi Nam's aunt, and Tae Kyung's mom. On their own, fine. They aren't exactly expertly flushed out characters, but it is just a silly little romcom, so I can deal with that. But the only female character that falls between these two polar opposites is the stylist. I don't even remember her name, so she's not exactly on the screen a lot. What we are left with are two examples of women: the desired and the undesired.

Mi Nam is pretty much the Victorian ideal of a woman: the angel of the house. She's passive, powerless, meek, and self-sacrificing. She heaps all the blame on herself. She is doing a favor for her brother by masquerading as a boy. While it is understandable to feel guilt over lying to those you've grown close to, Mi Nam treats it as a sin. She tries to suppress her feelings for Tae Kyung in order to keep harmony in their little family. All of her actions are focused around pleasing the men in her life.

Then we have He Yi. Who, because she lacks all of the qualities that make Mi Nam so 'good' is labeled as 'bad'. He Yi looks out for herself. She is strong, driven, and will take what she wants. For every instance of Mi Nam sitting back quietly, suffering for her supposed sins, we have He Yi ignoring the feelings of others, and focusing solely on what she desires.

OK, so He Yi is kind of a bitch. I get that, every story has a villain. I don't think it would bother me so much if Mi Nam wasn't such a pinnacle of Victorian virtue. It's such a blatant case of binary issues. He Yi isn't Mi Nam, thus she is evil. The only time people like He Yi is when she is masquerading as a girl with Mi Nam's characteristics. Once they see that is not her real self, she is no longer the angel of the house. She is the 'other' type of woman. The other that society does not want or accept.

In a way, Tae Kyung's mom is kind of a twisted version of the angel of the house. Her entire world revolves around the love she lost. The only time we are allowed to feel sympathy for her is when she is mourning the loss of that love. She only softens when she talks of that man or of his children. But she has not devoted herself fully to her family like she is supposed to (see: Tae Kyung).

This whole thing is like a fairytale come to life. Mi Nam is going to marry the prince and the evil stepmother is going to get put in a barrel covered in nails and rolled down a hill.

See my icon for a show with less cookie cutter versions of women.

Autumn is my favorite season. Too bad it only lasts for about three weeks. It's raining pretty hard today, which makes me sad. While I love summer thunderstorms, rain in October just means the pretty leaves get knocked off the trees. And I have a yard this year, so I have to rake.

I signed up for NaNo again this year (my username is D. Coyle if anyone wants to buddy me, I'm not sure if anyone else is participating). I made a good dent in the word count last year, but got disillusioned pretty early on. There were plenty of things to distract me. I hope to rap up Karei Naru Spy and Return of Iljimae this weekend so I won't have any desire to sneak peeks at them instead of writing. The only other two dramas I'm watching are You're Beautiful and Smile, You. That's roughly four hours a week I'll give to drama watching. I may put a pause on my normal tv viewing. I haven't been that enamored of Glee recently, so I'm not that concerned. I can always play catch up with FlashForward and Vampire Diaries in December when nothing is on tv anyway.

OH! I watched the pilot for the new USA show White Collar and it was pretty entertaining. I'm not ready to write it off as fantastic yet, because it was a little uneven, but it has the capacity to be a solid hour of entertainment. At some point I need to sit down and watch all the episodes of Psych. Sometimes I'll randomly watch it if I see it on, but that's it. Anyway, if you like Psych you should probably check out White Collar. Plus, it has Matthew Bomer who is so incredibly pretty (I'm such a sucker for blue eyes and dark hair) and dresses like a Rat Packer.

So, I kept ignoring the emails from Geocities about how they were shutting down. I kept saying I'd get around to moving my stuff (I hosted my lj css file over there) but I never did. So now I have some default layout up while I shop around for something I like. So many layout are so ugly...

My sister starts her new job at the newspaper today in the marketing department.  She's employed!  Go her!  I can't wait to hear about it.

The second episode of Merlin was pretty funny.  I laughed out loud at quite a few bits.  The romance was 'meh' - too fast, so I didn't really buy it.

Painter of the Wind on the other hand~~~  I only have four episodes left and I'm dreading it ending.  This is such a well constructed story, the only fault I have with it is that they tend to stretch plotlines out a bit.  But it's a leisurely and lush journey, so I can't help but really enjoy it.

Damon continues to be the only redeeming quality of The Vampire Diaries.  I don't know why I downloaded the third episodew when I decided to stop watching it in favor of FlashForward.  Everything else is so boring, but I do so enjoy when Damon is on screen.

I'm nearing the last quarter of "I Capture The Castle" and it's simply wonderful and oh so charming.  I hate that it took me so long to start it.
