THIS IS EASY!

Sleeping Beauty.

Hands down. LOVE IT. Still do, despite having possibly the weakest female character ever created.

I was kind of obsessed with it as a child. I'd listen to the vinyl record my mother had of the Tchaikovsky ballet and dance around with the white blanket I slept with. I don't remember doing this, but I've seen the evidence and don't doubt it at all. I also made my cousins play Sleeping Beauty with me, which horrified them, because they were boys and it's about the girliest thing ever.

The Disney cartoon is one of my favorite movies, I love everything about it: the music, the animation, BASICALLY THE FACT THAT IT EXISTS. Which reminds me, I should totally rewatch it since it's been a few years.

I even wrote a paper on the evolution of the fairytale for an independent study I did on fairy tales as an undergrad.

When (okay - IF) I ever write an original story it's probably going to be a retelling of this tale, only severely updated to deal with the feminist issues I now have with it. (the heroine SLEEPS THROUGH THE CLIMAX. Not cool) confession time: I've already written a fanfiction version of Sleeping Beauty during my stint in the Draco/Hermione fandom. Don't look at me like that, rl friends... I never wanted to admit this to you, but I don't need to carry around this secret shame! You understand, right? Maybe you'll forget? *runs far away*

Drama Talk: Atashinchi no Danshi continues to be pretty cute, if underwhelming, but I'm totally just in this for the OTP of Chisato/Sho. I'm such a shameless shipper, it's not even funny. ([livejournal.com profile] sailorgaia! Hard Gay made a cameo appearance in episode 6 and I totally thought of you! OH DRAGON*CON)

MR BRAIN (I feel stupid just typing that, I'm glad I don't have to actually SAY it) is kind of awesome. I've always watched the first episode but I'm pretty sure I'll love it. KimuTaku's character is FANTASTIC. And is it just a fact of the universe that Mizushima Hiro has to have the WORST HAIR EVER. Ayase Haruka remains gorgeous, and her part it cute, but everyone else pales in comparison to KimuTaku.

"the heroine SLEEPS THROUGH THE CLIMAX."

I snickered here. :P

I liked them all, but I may like Hansel and Gretel the best. A house made out of candy is RI-DONK!

A house made out of candy is RI-DONK!

Not to mention SUPER GROSS! Candy just sitting there in the sun for years and years. Of course, it was probably magical candy, so it never went bad, but instead gave you cancer because of all the preservatives.

I kind of adore how gruesome Grimm's fairytales are. I got an old book from my grandparents with a bunch of lesser known tales and they were positively horrible. In one the evil stepmother got stuck in a barrel lined with nails and then rolled down a hill. ouch.

There's a "sequel" of sorts to sleeping beauty where she boils her mother in law. Have you read it? I'll Google it right now for ya!

Oh...WOW.
Man though, I can think of alot of wives who'd love to boil their mothers in law though. Sounds like a story for the ages!

OH WIKIPEDIA. Gotta take care of those evil women!

Yeah, I knew about the sequel because I researched the history of the story a few years ago. That's when I got pretty horrified about the entire thing, especially the original source "Sun, Moon, and Talia" in which the prince rapes the unconscious girl and she gives birth to twins. What a sweet love story!

There was an even earlier version, I believe it was Arabic (I'm really not sure), but it only has vague ties to the "Sun, Moon, and Talia" and Perrault's version.

Isnt that the goose girl? If so, she's not her stepmother but was her attendant or servant of some kind and took advantage of the naive "sweet" princess. I kind of disliked this story even as a kid because it just reinforced the status quo, like the peasant lady needs to stay in her place. Seriously the punishment did not fit the crime, just going back to her drab commoner life where she has no rights under law, is probably punishment enough. lol yes fairy tales were srs bzns for chibi tai. Anyway that's assuming it IS the goose girl that's from. Since I remember the evil queen in snow white was forced to dance in heated shoes and damn I forgot what happened to cinderalla's step mom. I know in one version the step sisters CUT OFF PARTS OF THEIR FEET to fit into the shoes.

I honestly don't remember which story that was from. All I remember is the barrel thing!

The version of Cinderella I read was the one where the stepsisters cut off parts of their feet! They had to fit in the shoes and then the prince saw the blood and was like, "Wtf? How about NO."

In that version she also had several dresses, silver and gold I believe, that came from a tree which I thought was AWESOME.

She can't join in the fighting OR the sex, like any proper lady.

Where does this Draco/Hermione version exist? I am intrigued!

It's kind of a combination of a few different fairytales, but Sleeping (which I almost just typed as "Spelling" wtf?) Beauty was the big one. I wrote a few years ago for [livejournal.com profile] dmhgficexchange.

I'm trying to think of what my favorite fairy tale is. It's not coming to me. I love fairy tales but I never felt especially partial to one...well no I think I'll always have a big soft spot for "the beaut and the beast" it has a rather lovely message to it I think, even if the beast turns into a boring perfect prince at the end. and red riding hood is special cause there's so many interesting variations on the tale from written texts by perrault and brothers grimm, to various incarnations spread around by word of mouth of the peasants, folklore basically.

Yeah, it's not very feminist, but . . . dammit, I always wanted to be her!! Having a handsome price willing to fight a huge-ass dragon for you is pretty BOSS . . .

And I never had a problem with your fanfiction-- I remember it being VERY good back in the day *wishes you had finished the one with Tasuki in it . . . And the Bust a Groove one . . . ^_^*

Yeah, I know. Which is kind of one of the reasons I've always wanted to rewrite it, because for the longest time I wanted to be her and now it makes me feel SO LAME.

HAHA, I recently uncovered that Bust a Groove fanfic for shits and giggles. I also had a horrendous X-Files fic I wrote back in middle school that is still housed on the internet somewhere. Same with Buffy. My HP fics are miles better than those, but it's still embarrassing.

Fairy tales ♥

I spent a good portion of my youth obsessing over fairy tales, folklore, and mythology. Lucky, being able to do cool stuff like that in college!

My favorite fairy tale is one of the nasty ones; Bluebeard. In one of my poetry classes during college we had to write an original poem that was based on the style of a famous poet. Anne Sexton wrote a lot of poems based on fairy tales (she has a Sleeping Beauty one, which is actually one of my favorite poems ever), and I chose to write about Bluebeard. Except I made it feminist, because really, having to wait for your brothers to save you from being beheaded? In my version she killed Bluebeard herself. I also like the Grimm variant, The Robber Bridegroom, because it's the girl herself who outwits the bad guy.

One fairy tales I don't like; The Little Mermaid (the Andersen version, not the Disney). I'm pretty forgiving when it comes to fairy tales, but I cannot forgive this one for how goddamn stupid the little mermaid is. But I tend not to like the Andersen fairy tales very much in general...

I loved Bluebeard because it was SO RIDICULOUS. Seriously, he just had a room in his house filled with BLOOD? WHAT A PSYCHO.
